TERM 3 WEEK 9 2023
We hope to see many parents at our Book Parade this Thursday!
We would also love to see parents at the P and C meeting this evening. It's via Zoom so is very convenient. Please refer to P and C section below for the link. All welcome!
CONGRATULATIONS! ZONE DEBATING CHAMPIONS!
We are so proud of our Wattle debating team. A hearty congratulations to Ellen, Olivia, Dhiya, Avni, Yohann and Mahee. They have listened and acted upon feedback provided by the adjudicators along the way, which has enabled them to continually improve and build their capacity. They have also worked so well as a team throughout the year.
Last Wednesday, the team competed against Samual Gilbert for the Premier's Zone Debating Final, and became the Zone Debating Champions!
The topic was that parents should be allowed to leave children in Years 5 and above unsupervised in the evening. The team were congratulated for their: logical arguments, the range of reasons provided, and for the way they set up the model of why parents shouldn't leave students alone.
The next round involves the team in competing against other zone finalists in the Premier's Regional Debating final. This is being held on Friday and we wish the team all the best for the debate.
Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Miss Brasier for their outstanding guidance and coordination of the debating teams this year.
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY
This year the students last day of the school year will be Friday 15 December. There are two scheduled training days for teachers on Monday 18 December and Friday 19 December. Teachers have opted to reschedule our last training days to after school sessions which will occur this Wednesday evening and a Monday evening next term. This enables us to engage quality speakers to support our strategic directions and will be more effective as teachers can immediately plan and trial research based strategies in classrooms, rather than waiting for next year for implementation.

INFORMATION SESSION - Preventing online child sexual exploitation
The Australian Federal Police will be delivering a webinar for parents of teenagers, to build awareness of the emerging issues of online child sexual exploitation and sextortion.
With the prevalence of children and young people accessing the internet, online safety is becoming an increasing concern around the world. The increase in young people accessing the internet has seen a corresponding upward trend in cases of online child sexual exploitation.
Sextortion is an example of online child sexual exploitation or abuse which involves offenders, who often pretend to be another young person, coercing victims into sending them sexual images or videos of themselves online.
Kids Helpline data and data from the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) indicate a 60 per cent increase in reports of sexual extortion (sextortion) of young Australians in 2022 and 2023. The data indicates boys aged 14-17 are a primary target as victims of sexual extortion.
The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) will deliver a webinar to increase school community awareness of the trends, issues and response to online child sexual exploitation.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Spring has arrived and with its arrival comes the promise of warmer weather! While the official date for changeover to summer uniform is day 1, term 4, if the weather is warm over the next few weeks (and it looks like it could be), and should students feel more comfortable wearing summer uniform they are more than welcome. As the mornings can still be a little chilly, please check that jumpers are effectively labelled as we have many jumpers left lying around as the layers come off during the day. This way we can make sure items are returned to their rightful owners.
EVERY DAY MATTERS - REPEATED
Consistent attendance improves student outcomes, increases career options, and helps students build relationships and confidence.

Term 3 Week 9
Monday 11th September 2023
Dear Parents and Carers
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 14th September in the COLA for our Book Character Parade. The students and teachers are very excited about getting dressed up as their favourite book characters.
We hope you can help us find the GREEN sheep.
SAFETY FIRST
Please be reminded that it is a NO STOPPING zone just before the start of our Kiss and Drop zone at the front of our school. Please see the pictures above. Many of our school community members have paid a $365 fine after stopping there, even momentarily while waiting for cars to move up. We regularly have inspections by the rangers from the Hornsby Council. It is illegal to allow your child to get in the car in the NO STOPPING zone and also illegal to block the traffic. Please move forward and drive around the roundabout or the block and come back. It is strictly only a 2 minute waiting period in the Kiss and Drop zone before you will incur a fine. PLEASE work with us to keep our students and community members safe. It is important to be a good role model by using the crossing at all times to cross the road and by following the road rules.
Thank you
Leonie Cole
Relieving Deputy Principal

Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Responsibility - Wear full school uniform with pride
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Aryan C (3G), Blake H (3S), Indiana (KH), Cara C (5B), Victoria X (2D), Rohit S (2D), Sherlock Y (KN), Daniel S (3G), Sua K (5T), Jia K (5B), Yu W (KN), Kelly S (3S), Jaden P (6FG), Olivia W (KH), Zhao X (1B), Max A (KS), Frederick L (3B), Nairah M (3S), Sophia C (4R), Schvelle C (5B), Ellie W (2E), Manu B (3S), Jordan Z (3/4B), Aaron S (5B)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.
