TERM 3 WEEK 4 2023
Last week, we proudly celebrated 175 years of public education in NSW.
It was a great pleasure and privilege to celebrate Education Week with our wonderful community during last Tuesday's Open Day.
This week, I proudly share what was happening in each classroom!
WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN KINDY?
The children in KH were writing and representing numbers up to and beyond 30.
The KN children were applying what they have learnt about narrative structure, by retelling a story using picture prompts. They were also representing numbers they knew in different ways.
KS students were showing parents their workbooks and were practising their handwriting.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK IN YEAR 1!
1B was a very busy classroom with the children creating repeating number patterns and writing persuasive sentences. They were also sharing their learning goals, reading a book, taking visitors on a tour of the classroom and playing games.
The 1KR children were sharing their stories and were completing a dot number talk.
Parents were able to listen to their child reading to them in 1M, and these children also shared their reading goals with their special visitor/s.
POPPING IN TO YEAR 2 CLASSROOMS
The 2D children were able to show their parents around the classroom, share their learning goals, read a book to them, do a number talk and play a maths game.
2E students were playing maths games to reinforce their understandings related to whole number.
2R were sharing their learning goals with their parents and visitors and were playing maths games. The games involved the children articulating the strategies they were using and justifying the chosen strategies.
LET'S VISIT YEAR 3
3B students were enthusiastically sharing their learning goals and the favourite story they had written. They were also completing chance experiements.
The 3G students were sharing their English and mathematics goals with their parents. They showed their project booklet and were working on a maths activity.
3S were also sharing their learning goals and their best story they had written, and were completing chance experiments for maths.
WHAT DID WE SEE IN YEAR 4?
The students in 4M and 4R were able to share their work samples and their learning goals and were also explaining the learning trajectory in reading. They were also having a lot of fun building a tower.
3/4B students were applying their understanding of angles, shapes and 3D objects to build a freestanding tower from spaghetti and marshmallows.
WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN YEAR 5 CLASSROOMS?
Eddie Woo logic maths puzzles were being pondered in 4/5B, while 5N and 5T were sharing their learning goals and designing a golf course to apply their understandings about angles. 5B were also learning about angles.
WHAT WERE OUR YEAR 6 STUDENTS UP TO?
6H were building a prison containing two concentric circles with a number of specified parameters. Using their understanding of concepts explored, they were working out the radius, diameter and circumference, the amount of fencing needed and the most economical fencing company to use.
6DM, 6FG and 6G classes were engaged in problem solving and were challenging their parents to a quiz, Are you smarter than a 6th grader? Additionally 6DM were sketching their parents, 6FG were sharing their writing goals and were asking for feedback on these and 6G were sketching.
YEAR 1 PHONICS SCREENING CHECK
Year 1 students will be participating in the DoE's statewide screening check of phonics over the coming weeks. Here is some useful information about the phonics check:
What is phonics?
Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need.
What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, quick assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes.
Why use nonsense words?
The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before.
More information
Please refer to the information flyer below for further information. If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

Term 3 Week 4
Monday 7th August 2023
Dear Parents and Carers
I am so proud to be part of this wonderful school community; sharing our vision: Empowering Learners Today For Tomorrow!
During last week's Open Day, it was certainly heartwarming to see so many visitors back on school grounds, visiting classrooms and enjoying the opportunity to share in students' learning. Mums, dads and many grandparents were able to provide great feedback to their children and I know teachers were very appreciative of the supportive presence. As well as visiting most classrooms, I was fascinated to see our 3D printer in action, in the computer room! I hope you enjoy a snaphot of my classroom visits in the photo gallery below.
The Library too, was inundated by enthusiastic parents, keen to purchase books and products at our annual Book Fair. Thank you so much for your support.
Congratulations to the talented performers and their teachers, who were showcased at last week's Education Week Assembly. The Concert Band Band entertained us with 'Funky Town', 'The Mandalorian' and 'Party Rock Anthem'. The Choir performed 'Star Dance' in two-part harmony and the Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 Dance Troupes were dazzling!
On Friday, it was a privilege to showcase our wonderful school to three, 2008 graduates of John Purchase Public School. Fifteen years hence, as adults embarking on their own diverse careers in visual arts, physiotherapy and business, it was fascinating to hear the ex-students reminisce about past teachers, learning English in the EALD room, playing chess in the library and the price of bread sticks at the canteen! A search through the honour rolls in the hall was important, as was an attempted rendition of the JPPS school song! Here's the evidence: empowering learners today, for tomorrow. We do have a positive impact!
If you didn't manage to pop in to school last week, our JPPS Fly-Through Tour is housed on the JPPS website and repeated below, for your convenience!
Hoping you are able to find many positives in your week ahead!

Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Eva L (KN), Aisha (5B), Miya J (3S), Maya H (3G), Samkit S (3/4B), Orlando G (1KR), Olivia x2 (5B), Sasha W (3G), Emily B (1B), Claire G (KN), Timothy W (3S), Phoebe C (1KR), Sophia C (3G), Catriona W (KS), Rosie A (4M)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

These awards will be presented to recipients at the Principal's Morning Tea, at the end of Term 3. This event will be held in the hall at 10:30am, on Tuesday, 19th September. Parents of recipients, are invited to attend.

Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you’ll get a lot out of it too!
