We are proudly celebrating 175 years of public education in NSW this week! We hope you can join us for our Education Week celebrations tomorrow.
NAPLAN STUDENT REPORTS
Individual Student Reports (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3 and 5 were sent home with students last Wednesday. These reports can be a valuable resource in supporting their educational growth.
From 2023, NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement to give teachers, parents, and carers clearer information on how students are performing. The proficiency standards are set to a challenging but reasonable level expected for students at the time of NAPLAN testing. What NAPLAN assesses has not changed.
The NAPLAN proficiency standards include 4 proficiency levels for each assessment area at each year level:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Each of the standards represent increasingly challenging skills and understandings as students move through the years of schooling.
The NAPLAN Individual Student Reports can be an invaluable resource for parents to support their child's educational journey.
To make the most of the information provided, parents can;
Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge your child's strengths and successes in the assessed subjects. This can generate enthusiasm, build their confidence and increase motivation.
Identify Areas for Growth: Pay close attention to the sections that highlight areas for improvement. Parents can work with their child's teacher to develop strategies to address these challenges effectively.
Maintain a Positive Outlook/ Keep Perspective: While NAPLAN is a valuable tool, it is essential to remember that it is only one way we gather information about our students' progress and it is only one aspect of your child's education. Focusing on their overall growth and development is equally important as we all have areas of strength!
Reach Out to Teachers: If you have any questions or concerns about the NAPLAN results or the Individual Student Reports, don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers. They will be able to provide further insights and suggestions to support your child's learning.
CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN NSW
Education Week is an annual state-wide event held during the first week of August to celebrate NSW public education and the achievements of local schools and students. Education Week 2023 will be held from 31 July to 4 August 2023 (Week 3, Term 3).
This year’s theme is 175 years of public education in NSW and focuses on learning from our past, celebrating our achievements and embracing the future with confidence.
This year marks 175 years since the establishment of public schools in NSW. Founded in 1848, the Board of National Education was formed and tasked with establishing a public education system in NSW. Prior to 1848, schools operated under a denominational system and were the responsibility of churches.
Theme - 175 years of public education in NSW
Learning from our past
- We reflect and learn from policies and practices of the past 175 years.
- We engage in truth-telling to have honest conversations about the past.
Celebrating our achievements
- We celebrate our achievements throughout the NSW public education system.
- We celebrate the significant contribution public education has made to society over the past 175 years.
- We celebrate the work of teachers and support staff in developing and shaping the next generation.

Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Aspire: Have a growth mindset
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Hayden T (2E), Amelia D (1B), Ronnie (2D), Miya J (3S), Kanav G x2 (5B), Amelie J (2E), Jaime L (3S), Isabel (1B), Caroline L (3/4B), Jaden (6FG), Brian S (KN), Blake H (3S), Olivia X (1B), Kelly S (3S), Giovanna (5T), Siya W (3B), Collin L (1B), Garron (3G), Rae Kit (4R), Zachary (5T), Sean S x2 (5B), Nihal N x2 (3G), Reni C (2E), Ariel C (1KR), Liam C (1KR), Ekansh G (5N), Nathan Z (2R)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

On Monday 24th July both John Purchase Public School Debating teams, the Wattles and the Gumnuts, debated against two Baulkham Hills Public school teams.
The topics were: Should children in Years 5 & 6, do 20 minutes of household chores every day? Should children in Year 5 & 6, cook dinner at least one night a week for their families?
Both our teams were arguing the affirmative and both teams won!
Thankyou Miss Brasier and Mrs Robinson for helping us to have such successful season.
Our next debate will be against each other.
At this stage, the Gumnut team is undefeated and the Wattles have had 2 wins.
Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) Closing Week 5
The PRC closes this term, on Friday, 18th August. Please make sure all books are entered into the online reading record by midnight on that Friday, otherwise, the reading list will not be valid for this year's PRC.
Students use the same username and password to access their online reading record as they do to sign onto computers/ipads at school.
Happy reading!

FROM THE CANTEEN Volunteers - We are putting out another call for any parents who might have a spare few hours once a month to volunteer in the canteen. We just have a couple of days where we desperately need an extra helper - specifically one Friday which is our busiest day of the week.
If you can spare time from 9.30-1.15 once a month, please either call in and see Snoewy or Anna, email jpps.canteen@gmail.com or call us. All help is greatly appreciated and your children will love seeing you at school.

Want to do something life-changing in 2023? Why not volunteer at JOHN PURCHASE PUBLIC SCHOOL as an ethics teacher!
Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you’ll get a lot out of it too!
