TERM 3 WEEK 2 2023
I’d like to enthusiastically welcome back our students and their families for Term 3. I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break over the holidays and look forward to another productive term.
LEARNING TRAJECTORIES
Last Friday, the Term 3 Learning Overviews were emailed home. The learning trajectories and overviews demonstrtae what the children will be focusing on this term, across Key Learning Areas. Thank you to our hardworking assistant principals and teachers for putting these together.
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY
Last Monday, our teachers collaborated in stage teams to continue developing the Term 3 programs across Key Learning Areas. It was affirming to visit the teams, to hear about the wonderful plans and lessons they have planned for this term.
We also engaged in high impact professional learning in the area of Strategies for Teaching EAL/D (English as an additional language or dialect) Students. The teachers had the opportunity to particpate in a range of activites, which were then embedded within lessons they will be teaching this term.
NAPLAN 2023 INDIVIDUAL STUDENT REPORTS
This term, parents of Year 3 and Year 5 students will receive their child’s NAPLAN 2023 individual student report. I want to share with you some important information to know about individual student results and NAPLAN 2023.
New proficiency standards
From 2023, the Individual student report will look different to previous years. One significant change is that NAPLAN results are now reported against proficiency standards, with student achievement shown against 4 levels of proficiency: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. The NAPLAN measurement scale and time series have also been reset. For more information see the individual student report brochure for parents and carersExternal link. The brochure is available in other languages on the NAPLAN results and reports websiteExternal link.
NAPLAN reports and ongoing assessments
NAPLAN tests are only one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. As they are held once every 2 years for each student, they cannot replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. For information about how to read individual student reports watch the reading the NAPLAN Individual Student Report videoExternal link.
Student results
When reading your child’s NAPLAN 2023 results please keep in mind:
- From 2023, new proficiency standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting. This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards.
- A performance result less than expected may indicate the student requires more targeted support or may just reflect other factors that affected their performance on that day.
- Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
- Individual students may demonstrate different skills or understandings depending on which parts of the tests they performed more strongly in. Students whose results fall near the top of a proficiency level will be able to demonstrate more of the skills, or more complex understanding. Students whose results fall near the lower end of a level will be able to demonstrate fewer of the skills, or less complex understanding.
- It is important to remember NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. They complement ongoing assessments so that teachers can best support teaching and learning. The achievement demonstrated in classroom-based assessments and reporting through A-E grades provide parents with timely feedback on how their child is progressing.
We encourage any parent or carer who is concerned about their child’s NAPLAN results to talk to your child’s teacher. If your child results indicated that they ‘Needs additional support’, please contact your child’s teacher to discuss, as additional support may already be available to those students who need it.
FAREWELL JANINE
Last term, Mrs Mugridge returned to school for the last two weeks, before retirement. Janine was appointed to John Purchase in 1996, and predominately taught Kindergarten for many years. Most recently, Janine has worked on a part time basis, to deliver reading programs and to cover absent teachers' classes, for short periods of time.
We cannot thank Janine enough for her outstanding work in supporting students' learning, and for assisting her colleagues, for many years. We wish her a happy, enjoyable retirement.
MOBILE PHONES
A report has been received about parents driving on Purchase Rd while using mobile phones during the afternoon pick up period. I ask that parents and carers please please obey the road rules, in this busy zone. We have almost 600 children leaving the school at this time with hundreds of parents and carers travelling along this road.
Please help to keep our students, staff and community safe by obeying the road rules, including refraining from using phones while driving.
BABY NEWS!
A hearty, albeit belated congratulations to Mr and Mrs Taylor on the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Savannah. Savannah was born on 7 May, weighing 2.6kgs.
EVERY DAY MATTERS
Consistent attendance improves student outcomes, increases career options, and helps students build relationships and confidence.

Dear Parents and Carers
Term 3 is well and truly upon us! During the School Development Day, last week, our staff engaged in valuable professional learning, about supporting our many EAL/D students.
Next week, schools across NSW celebrate 175 years of public education. Members of our community are cordially invited to 'Open Day' at JPPS on Tuesday, 1st August. Classrooms will be open for visits, the Book Fair will be held in the Library and a special celebration assembly, will be held under the COLA. Please see the invitation below.
All students are encouraged to enter the SRC's poster initiative. Details appear below.
Cases of head lice have been reported. Please refer to the information I have included from the NSW Department of Health.

Year 6 Canberra Excursion
Year 6 enjoyed an excellent 3-day excursion to Canberra at the end of last term. Thank you to Miss Nelson and the accompanying staff: Miss Gillett, Mrs Townsend, Miss Scholz, Mr Girvan and Mrs Aoutal.
What are head lice?
The head louse, or Pediculus humanus capitis, is a parasitic insect that can be found on the head, eyebrows, and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp. Head lice only affect humans and cannot be passed on to animals.
How do you catch head lice?
Head lice are most common among primary school aged children. They cannot fly, jump or swim and are spread by direct contact with the hair of the infested individual. A head lice infestation is not the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene and it can affect all types of hair regardless of its condition or length. Head lice are rarely transferred through clothing, hats, furniture or bedding.
Female head lice lay eggs close to the scalp on the hair shaft. Eggs hatch after 5-7 days, leaving empty eggshells (nits) glued to the hair shaft. These eggshells are more noticeable as hair grows and they get carried away from the scalp. Nymphs that emerge from eggshells take 7-8 days to grow to adult sized lice. They may take another 7 days to start breeding and hence it is important to remove them to stop them spreading.
Do head lice cause illness or disease?
Head lice do not transmit disease causing micro-organisms. However, they can cause irritation, resulting in itchiness. Sometimes, itchiness and subsequent scratching of the scalp can increase the risk of secondary infection.
Using insecticides and other substances to control head lice can actually have more serious health effects than the lice themselves. Swapping between different treatments or using several different treatments at the same time can cause serious skin irritation, itchiness and other complications. Registered chemicals that kill lice are usually safe, but excessive use of other substances, such as home remedies and other insecticides, can cause irritation.
How serious is the head lice problem?
Head lice are one of the most commonly reported health complaints from parents and teachers. The NSW Health Nitbuster program has found that when sampled, more than 23 per cent of primary school aged children in New South Wales had head lice. Infestations appear to be on the increase, due to factors such as:
- resistance to the common chemicals used in head lice products
- inappropriate use of the treatments
- changing social and school practices.
While head lice are not known to carry disease, they are a nuisance for parents and children. The social stigma associated with head lice infestation can affect children's comfort and ability to learn in the classroom. Unsuccessful treatments can frustrate parents and lead them to seek more desperate measures that may be harmful and ineffective.

Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Respect: Leave the toilets clean and tidy
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Rihaan (3S), Hannah (KH), Shivani (3B), Abigail G (KN), Hudson T (KN), Rae Kit (4R), Nairah M (3S), Aveer (3S), Travis M (2E), Oscar (4R), Shanaya (KN), Bhavya (4R), Charlotte (2D), Rohan N (3S), Mya C (3S), Prayaan (2D), Matthew H (KN), Alice (2D), Ruaan (2S), Shahrad P (3B)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

Rebate
Year 6 students from our school have recently undertaken, an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture,
heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
The rebate was factored into costs to parents and is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) Closing Week 5
The PRC closes this term, on Friday, 18th August. Please make sure all books are entered into the online reading record by midnight on that Friday, otherwise, the reading list will not be valid for this year's PRC.
Students use the same username and password to access their online reading record as they do to sign onto computers/ipads at school.
Happy reading!
