TERM 2 WEEK 10 2023
I hope you enjoy the last week of term and wish our community a safe and enjoyable holiday. All students, K to 6, are expected to return to school on Tuesday 18 July.
Our first newsletter for Term 3 will be disseminated on Monday 24th July (Week 2).
WORKING WITH 'FRIENDS OF TEN' IN KN!
What a pleasure to pop in to KN for a fantastic mathematics lesson.
The children were asked what 'combinations to 10' they could make.
Miss Scholz unpacked the vocabulary, allowing the children to explore the meaning of combinations. The children then used blocks to investigate.
They were guided to make as many combinations as they could think of, until they were asked, How do you know you have all the combinations? How do you know you haven't missed any out? The children chatted about this question with their partner, while excitedly using the blocks to help them work this out and/or to prove their thinking. The students recorded their thinking on the mini whiteboards, while Miss Scholz was able to assess them on the spot, to see who needed an extension question, and who needed an enabling prompt. It was wonderful to hear students learning moving forward from their responses to the cleverly crafted questions, and it was fabulous to hear the children's reasoning as they shared their responses with the class.
Thank you for sharing reasoning and problem solving in Kindy!
PUZZLING MATHS IN 5N
The students were in a a race against time to solve a number of tricky riddles. The solutions would provide a fictitious character, Paolo, with instructions to escaping from the imaginary island, where he had been shipwrecked.
This lesson was incredibly engaging and provided students with multiple opportunities to:
* apply their mathematical understandings around multiplication and division
* use logic to solve problems
* work collaboratively
* make connections between mathematical concepts
* further develop reasoning skills
* articulate their thinking
It was great to see the deepening of conceptual understandings through the opportunity of applying what they had been learning around factors, multiples, prime numbers, square and cubed numbers, and multiplication by 100s and 1000s, and to see a range of enabling prompts (such as working collaboratively and having additional clues provided) which made the challenges accessible for all learners.
ANAPHYLAXIS AND ALLERGIC REACTION PLANS HAVE BEEN UPDATED
The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) has released updated versions of ASCIA Action Plans (2023) to improve ease of use. Please ask your child's doctor, to use the updated version, when they are next renewing their plans. These are available on the ASCIA website and are included below for your convenience. COVID SMART MEASURES - REPEATED
While the community continues to live with COVID-19, NSW Health has advised that the unpredictable nature of the virus will continue to present a health risk to the community, especially during the winter months while other respiratory illness circulate. As a response, our school will continue to operate with our baseline COVID-smart measures in place throughout this term to minimise transmission while prioritising student and staff wellbeing. These includes a combination of layered safety measures such as:
- Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptomsExternal link. Students and staff are advised to stay home until they are well, even if they have a negative COVID-19 test result. Students can be supported to learn remotely if they are well enough.
- Boosted day cleaning of high-touch areas in our schools.
- Strongly encouraging masks to be worn by all students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors or outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain, and if exposed to COVID-19External link.
- Strongly encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for our students and staff, including COVID-19 booster shots and flu vaccinations for anyone eligible.
- Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.
- Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to our school community, free of charge. Please email the school if you would like some RAT tests sent home.
Our school may be directed to temporarily reintroduce additional COVID-19 measures, including mandatory mask-wearing and postponing events and gatherings, or directing a cohort to learn from home for a short period to minimise transmission risks. The NSW Department of Education’s COVID-19 Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing team will continue to lead this work when it is needed.
For further information about the COVID-smart measures in place this term refer to the department’s COVID-smart measures at school on our Advice for families page
On behalf of our school, I want to thank you for your support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe.

Key Messages About Student Reports (repeated)
Ongoing formative assessments, summative data, anecdotal records and observations, are used by teachers.
The A-E grades (and equivalent word descriptors) awarded in Years 1 to 6, are judgements about a student’s performance, at a particular point in time, based on the body of work in the current semester.
Teacher judgements are made against the NSW syllabus standards and not the cohort, to ensure consistency.
Dialogue occurs between teachers across years/stage levels, to enhance the level of consistency in our student reporting. These informed judgements are one part of the total picture.
If you have a query about your child's report, please contact your child's teacher.
Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Aspire: Be kind to your parents, teachers, students and new people you meet
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly, after the holidays - Week 2, Monday 24 July. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Tia (3S), Ellie W (2E), Mia B x2 (3S), Gabriel B (3S), Aiden K (2E), Samantha (KH), Timothy W (3S), Jennifer (3B), Salome (3B), Nirvi K (2R), Shivanya (1B), Olivia O (2E), Maggie L (1KR), Noah S (KS)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

THE GAME CHANGER CHALLENGE
Ten Stage 3 students represented John Purchase Public School in the NSW Department of Education's thinking design competition, 'The Game Changer Challenge' (GCC). Two groups, The Eco Kids and The High Voltage Cool Kids, each produced a video to highlight their research, to devise an innovation or invention that could help their local community. Over 400 submissions were made to the GCC competition and our teams were highly commended for their hard work and game-changing ideas. Well done!

TEACHING ETHICS AT JPPS (repeated)
Want to do something life-changing in 2023? Why not volunteer at JOHN PURCHASE PUBLIC SCHOOL as an ethics teacher!
Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you’ll get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
