Tonight's P&C Meeting will be held via Zoom. Please refer to the details published below.
Have a wonderful week!
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) - REPEATED
Please be reminded of the WWCC forms for parents volunteering at school.
Volunteers who are parents of students, are classified as exempt workers and this form is to be completed: WWCC Declaration for Volunteers and Non-Child Related Contractors.
This form must be completed by parents and submitted to the front office, when they volunteer for the school or for the P & C. There are spare copies at the office, for your convenience.
The declaration form that the P & C have been completing for volunteers (ie the WWCC Declaration for Contractors with Workers in Child-Related Roles (formerly called Working With Children Check Declaration for Contractors Hiring Sub-Contractors in Child-Related Roles) is to be filled out by the P&C for any volunteers engaged through the P&C who are not parents of students. However this is no longer required by the DoE for parents volunteering.
The school must also sight photo ID when parents sign in at the office.
COVID SMART MEASURES - REPEATED
While the community continues to live with COVID-19, NSW Health has advised that the unpredictable nature of the virus will continue to present a health risk to the community, especially during the winter months while other respiratory illness circulate. As a response, our school will continue to operate with our baseline COVID-smart measures in place throughout this term to minimise transmission while prioritising student and staff wellbeing. These includes a combination of layered safety measures such as:
- Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptomsExternal link. Students and staff are advised to stay home until they are well, even if they have a negative COVID-19 test result. Students can be supported to learn remotely if they are well enough.
- Boosted day cleaning of high-touch areas in our schools.
- Strongly encouraging masks to be worn by all students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors or outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain, and if exposed to COVID-19External link.
- Strongly encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for our students and staff, including COVID-19 booster shots and flu vaccinations for anyone eligible.
- Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.
- Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to our school community, free of charge. Please email the school if you would like some RAT tests sent home.
Our school may be directed to temporarily reintroduce additional COVID-19 measures, including mandatory mask-wearing and postponing events and gatherings, or directing a cohort to learn from home for a short period to minimise transmission risks. The NSW Department of Education’s COVID-19 Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing team will continue to lead this work when it is needed.
For further information about the COVID-smart measures in place this term refer to the department’s COVID-smart measures at school on our Advice for families page
On behalf of our school, I want to thank you for your support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe.

Term 2 Week 9
Monday 19th June 2023
Dear Parents and Carers
Congratulations to our Senior Choir and Stage 2 students, who all presented some entertaining choral items, at assembly, last week! Our Training Band and Concert Bands also entertained family and friends at an evening performance, held last week. Further details appear below.
As the term is rapidly drawing to a close, it's time to acknowledge and congratulate our Bronze Award recipients. Term 2's Bronze Award students and their parents, will be invited to attend the Principal's Morning Tea, next Tuesday morning, 27th June. This event will be held in the school hall at 10:30am and invitations will be distributed this week. Term 2's Bronze Medallion recipients will have morning tea with Mrs Black next Monday, 26th June.
As rain interrupted the final events of our recent athletics carnival, the 800m race and relays will be held this Thursday, 22nd June, weather permitting! Students in Years 3-6 and those 8-year old competitors in Year 2, will walk to the oval after morning assembly, supervised by teaching staff.
Thank you to those parents, who were able to attend my information session about student reports, last week. We plan to release Semester 1 student reports via the JPPS Parent Portal, this Thursday, 22nd June. All individual student reports, EALD reports (if applicable) and grade statistics about achievement levels in Years 1 to 6, will be available, from Thursday.
Please ensure that you have established correct access to the JPPS Parent Portal by following the instructions published below.
Have an enjoyable week!
Mrs Adela King
Deputy Principal
Key Messages About Student Reports
Ongoing formative assessments, summative data, anecdotal records and observations, are used by teachers.
The A-E grades (and equivalent word descriptors) awarded in Years 1 to 6, are judgements about a student’s performance, at a particular point in time, based on the body of work in the current semester.
Teacher judgements are made against the NSW syllabus standards and not the cohort, to ensure consistency.
Dialogue occurs between teachers across years/stage levels, to enhance the level of consistency in our student reporting. These informed judgements are one part of the total picture.
If you have a query about your child's report, please contact your child's teacher.
Athletics Carnival
On Thursday, 8th June, K-6 students participated in two sporting events, run concurrently at Greenway Oval. Congratulations to Mrs Robbins, who coordinated K-2 and Mrs Townsend, who coordinated 3-6. Parent volunteers were kept busy operating the canteen and sausage sizzle during the day. Thank you to Year 10 students from CTHS, who also assisted.
After a rain interruption, we plan to hold the 800m and relay events this Thursday morning, at Greenway Oval.
Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Aspire: Be kind
Congratulations Silver Award Recipients
These awards were presented to students on Thursday, 15th June.
Congratulations Gold Award Recipients
These awards were presented to students on Thursday, 15th June.
Congratulations Bronze Medallion Recipient
This award was presented on Thursday, 15th June.
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.

Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

Debating
Last Wednesday, our two debating teams travelled to Castle Hill Public School to compete in Round 2 of the Premier's Debating Challenge.
The first debate was between Team Gumnut: Emaan, Jessica, Rachel and Ellie, and Castle Hill Team Red. The topic of the debate was 'That parents should make their Year 5 and 6 kids watch the news with them'. Team Gumnut was affirmative, and after a tough challenge defending the benefits of watching the news, they were declared the winners of the debate.
Team Wattle: Mahee, Dhiya, Avni and Ellen, then debated against Castle Hill Team Blue. John Purchase was also affirmative in this debate, arguing 'That kids in Year 5 and above should have the right to a minimum of 1 hour of recreational screentime each day'. Team Wattle used examples to show how screentime can allow for communication, relaxation and enjoyment, and were announced the winners of the debate.
Congratulations both teams!

Band Concert
On Wednesday night, 14th June, families and friends enjoyed a lovely evening of music hosted by the JPPS training and concert bands. This was the first concert for the year. The training band performed first with the conductor, Steve, taking the audience on a musical journey of the training bands' progression, thus far. This was an impressive performance, considering students only started learning their instruments this year and began playing as a band, at the beginning of Term 2.
All the training band students should be congratulated on their commitment each week, at the group lessons and band rehearsals. They have learnt a lot about music, their instruments and playing in a band, in a short period of time and this was evident in the pieces that they performed.
Following the training band, the concert band performed under the guidance of Ben, the conductor. The concert band played a number of pieces and gave us a sneak preview of a piece they are currently working on. They even had the training band up and dancing at one point! I'm sure all those who attended would agree, that the students and conductors should be congratulated on a fantastic evening of music and entertainment!

Thank You from the Canteen
A massive thank you to all the parents who helped in the canteen at the Athletics Carnival. As usual, we couldn't operate the canteen on this busy day without the generous help of our parent volunteers who packed over 400 lunch orders, served students and cooked all the sausages on the BBQ.
Thank you! 😊

TEACHING ETHICS AT JPPS (repeated)
Want to do something life-changing in 2023? Why not volunteer at JOHN PURCHASE PUBLIC SCHOOL as an ethics teacher!
Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you’ll get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
