TERM 2 WEEK 7 2023
Have a wonderful week.
Please note the next newsletter will be sent out on Monday 19 June, due to the public holiday next Monday 12 June.
SAFETY OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
With close to 600 children departing the school at 2:50pm followed by approximately 2000 students leaving Cherrybrook Technology High School, ten minutes later, the congestion on Purchase Rd, requires careful, thoughtful and legal behaviour by all.
Safety is our major concern. Safety is much more important than getting away quickly.
Parents are encouraged to park their cars legally and safely a distance away and then walk to the school. Please do not pull over in no stopping zones and do not call children to cross the road, away from the pedestrian crossing.
Parents and school staff are models for the children. The children watch what we do, how we solve problems, how we speak, and how we act toward others, and they learn from us. They learn what we want them to learn as well as what we don't want them to learn.
USING THE KISS 'N' DROP
Reminders on using the Kiss 'n' Drop zone:
- Pull over as close to the front of the line as you can - if you stop half way along, leaving spaces in front of you, it means other cars can't get into the zone behind you.
- If the zone is full, keep driving! Behind the zone there is a no stopping sign. While it is tempting to pull in there and wait, it impedes vision for the pedestrians using the pedestrian crossing, including the crossing supervisor. They cannot see the traffic. Please, please, please keep driving in this situation and use the round abouts, or otherwise go around the block. If everyone did this, the traffic would flow so much better.
- There is a two minute limit in the Kiss and Drop zone. If your child/ren is not there, drive off and come back, rather than taking up a space, preventing others from using the zone.
Traffic rangers will visit the school and will book those breaking the rules.
Please note that any aggressive or unsafe behaviour towards our staff, who are there in an effort to support our children, parents and carers, will be reported to the police. This is unacceptable.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Last week, Miss Scholz led the teaching staff through a professional learning session to explore the importance of Reconciliation, with the assistant principals for each stage then leading their teams through the planning of lessons, so that the students could learn about the importance of National Reconciliation Week.
This week runs from 27 May to 3 June every year, to commemorate two significant dates – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, Be a Voice for Generations, urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better, more just Australia for all of us.
Please refer to the information below to find out what students have been learning in classrooms.
STAGE ONE
The students in 1M and 2D shared their prior knowledge and then read a story to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's connection to country. Following this they made some turtle artworks inspired by the story.
The students in 2E explored the meaning of the word reconciliation, and the importance of Reconciliation Week. They then wrote about why it is important to work together and what they do at school to make sure they treat everyone equally and fairly.
STAGE TWO
3G participated in mini debates about the topic, “Why we should protect Uluru”
3S wrote persuasive letters to the government to protect Uluru.
3/4B completed a Connect, Extend and Challenge routine on the topics of reconciliation and the song “They took our children away”, by Archie Roach
4M learnt about the stolen generation using the song and picture book, They took the Children Away by Archie Roach. The class looked at what reconciliation means and why we have Reconciliation Week. 4M also read Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Murphy and Lisa Kennedy.
STAGE THREE
Stage 3 students learnt about the shared histories, cultures, and achievements of Indigenous Australians. They discussed the impact of Australian history and how Indigenous Peoples have been affected.
Year 6 students wrote a persuasive paragraph on why Reconciliation Week is important to recognise in schools, using evidence from texts. Year 5 students analysed the 1967 referendum poster and used research to create their own persuasive poster to convey their interpretation of the message.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC)
Please be reminded of the WWCC forms for parents volunteering at school.
Volunteers who are parents of students, are classified as exempt workers and this form is to be completed: WWCC Declaration for Volunteers and Non-Child Related Contractors.
This form must be completed by parents and submitted to the front office, when they volunteer for the school or for the P & C. There are spare copies at the office, for your convenience.
The declaration form that the P & C have been completing for volunteers (ie the WWCC Declaration for Contractors with Workers in Child-Related Roles (formerly called Working With Children Check Declaration for Contractors Hiring Sub-Contractors in Child-Related Roles) is to be filled out by the P&C for any volunteers engaged through the P&C who are not parents of students. However this is no longer required by the DoE for parents volunteering.
The school must also sight photo ID when parents sign in at the office.
HAVE YOUR SAY ON DRAFT PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH P AND C FEDERATION NSW
Here is some information about the NSW Department of Education’s work to develop a Partnership Agreement with the P&C Federation NSW (P&C Federation).
The department and Federation have a strong relationship and are working on several joint initiatives. These aim to support local P&C associations and strengthen the voice of, and engagement with, parent and carer communities.
One key initiative is the development of a long-term Partnership Agreement that will further build on this strong working relationship.
A draft Partnership Agreement is now available for review. Your views are important to us.
If you would like to provide feedback, an online surveyExternal link is available via the NSW Government’s Have Your Say website and is open until 11 June 2023.
By working together in partnership, schools, parents and carers can support each other so that students can achieve their potential through public education.

COVID SMART MEASURES - UPDATED
While the community continues to live with COVID-19, NSW Health has advised that the unpredictable nature of the virus will continue to present a health risk to the community, especially during the winter months while other respiratory illness circulate. As a response, our school will continue to operate with our baseline COVID-smart measures in place throughout this term to minimise transmission while prioritising student and staff wellbeing. These includes a combination of layered safety measures such as:
- Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptomsExternal link. Students and staff are advised to stay home until they are well, even if they have a negative COVID-19 test result. Students can be supported to learn remotely if they are well enough.
- Boosted day cleaning of high-touch areas in our schools.
- Strongly encouraging masks to be worn by all students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors or outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain, and if exposed to COVID-19External link.
- Strongly encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for our students and staff, including COVID-19 booster shots and flu vaccinations for anyone eligible.
- Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.
- Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to our school community, free of charge. Please email the school if you would like some RAT tests sent home.
Our school may be directed to temporarily reintroduce additional COVID-19 measures, including mandatory mask-wearing and postponing events and gatherings, or directing a cohort to learn from home for a short period to minimise transmission risks. The NSW Department of Education’s COVID-19 Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing team will continue to lead this work when it is needed.
For further information about the COVID-smart measures in place this term refer to the department’s COVID-smart measures at school on our Advice for families page
On behalf of our school, I want to thank you for your support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe.
COVID CASES AT SCHOOL
We have been advised that members of the school community have recently tested positive to COVID-19.
Students and staff across stages may have had contact with a person who was infectious with COVID-19.
While testing and isolation is no longer mandatory for being exposed to someone with COVID-19 in school settings, NSW Health has provided advice on testing and isolation requirements for our school communities following exposure to COVID-19 that should be considered when making decisions for your child and family if this situation arises at your school.
You are reminded that students and staff cannot attend school if they are showing any symptoms of COVID-19. These include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting, extreme tiredness, unexplained chest pain or conjunctivitis (eye infection).
If symptoms occur at any time, your child should not attend school and should undertake a rapid antigen test. If the rapid antigen test is positive, your child should isolate as someone who has tested positive to COVID-19.
You are encouraged to register any positive test on the Service NSW website or Service NSW app so that you can be linked to important health care support and advice. Parents and carers are reminded to please ensure that you select your school name when prompted when registering a positive test for your child.
The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff across NSW are paramount at all times. As such, we will continue to ensure that all necessary health advice is closely followed.
Thank you for your support.
FIRE SAFETY
I would also like to take this opportunity to share Fire and Rescue NSW’s Winter Fire Safety Checklist. Please follow the instructions listed to help keep your households safe and warm during the colder months.

Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Aspire: Be a good friend, include others and be kind
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented at the next Monday morning assembly. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Congratulations to:
Victor H (KN), Holly S (KH), Asher H (KS), Andre L (!B), Timothy W (3S), Isabelle C x2 (6FG), Veronica B (1B), Kiaan (4M), Olivia O (2E), Miya J (3S), Adriana B (KH), Victoria X (2D), Aarvin (3B), Aveer (3S), Blake H (3S)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The shelf has been moved to just inside the office foyer, for greater convenience. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.
Bronze Award
These awards will be presented to recipients at the Principal's Morning Tea, at the end of Term 2. This event will be held in the hall at 10:30am on Tuesday, 27th June. Parents of recipients, are invited to attend.

Athletics Carnival
Sausage Sizzle - Just a reminder to parents that sausages for the Athletics Carnival have to be pre-ordered by 5pm Friday 2 June through Flexischools. You can order either beef or vegetarian sausages (pre-order only). No other lunches will be sold on the day. Please ensure you order via Flexischools before 5pm Friday so your child can have their sausage sizzle.
Volunteers – We are also looking for volunteers to help in the canteen at the Athletics Carnival specifically around 11-12.30 when we will be busy getting lunches packed and ready to hand out. Also if anyone is available to man the BBQ for a couple of hours cooking sausages that would be greatly appreciated.
If you can help in any way, please call in to the canteen and see Snoewy or Anna.

TEACHING ETHICS AT JPPS (repeated)
Want to do something life-changing in 2023? Why not volunteer at JOHN PURCHASE PUBLIC SCHOOL as an ethics teacher!
Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you’ll get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
