Have a great week!
School Attendance Matters!
Regular school attendance is valued as a key component to ensure a child achieves their personal best. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled and attend school each day it is open for students. Did you know that our department aims for each child's attendance to be at or greater than 95% each year?
When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. Arriving at school and class on time is important as it:
* ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
* helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
* gives students time to greet their friends before class
* reduces classroom disruption.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
However, on occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
• being sick or having an infectious disease
• having an unavoidable medical appointment
• being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
• exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral
Reasons such as birthdays, shopping, minding other children, routine check-ups or care such as haircuts and minor family events are considered unjustified. Medical and other health appointments for your child with specialists such as dentists or doctors (other than when they are ill) and appointments with other paraprofessionals should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays. Private tutoring arrangements should be made outside of school hours.
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. After an absence please ensure you send a note/ School Zine notification to your child’s class teacher stating the date and the reason for that absence.
Please Note: where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record.
If your child will be needing a longer term of absence of more than 10 school days, for example a holiday during the school term, please see our wonderful administration team at the school’s front office to complete a Certificate of Extended Leave. Supporting documentation such as travel details, itinerary or flight bookings may be needed to issue the certificate.

Dear Parents and Carers
Every week, is Harmony Week, at John Purchase Public School, as we recognise and delight in the multicultural backgrounds of our students and staff. This Thursday, our EAL/D teachers, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Mulcahy, are inviting our school community to a Harmony Day celebration assembly, at 1:35pm, under the COLA. Students may wear orange coloured clothing or cultural dress to school, on Thursday.
NAPLAN assessments will continue again, this week, for students in Years 3 and 5.
Fortunately, all races at the Cross Country Carnival had concluded before the afternoon temperatures soared, last Thursday. Thank you Mrs Mu and Mrs Townsend, for your thoughtful organisation and to our staff and helpers from CTHS, who acted as marshalls on the course.
Good luck to our swimmers, who are competing at the Sydney North Championships this Wednesday.
Face-to-face parent teacher interviews are planned to commemce on Monday, 3rd April. I will open the online booking site tomorrow morning. Please see details below.
Congratulations to Richard Walusimbi, the newly elected president of the JPPS Parents & Citizens' Association. We are very grateful to our P & C, who contribute their time so generously, in support of the students and staff at JPPS.
Have an enjoyable week!

Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Responsibility: Wait in an approved area to be picked up by your parent, sibling or carer
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box outside Mrs King’s office, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented next Monday morning.
Congratulations to:
Evan (KH), Michael W (6FG), Ryan W (3G), Jessica (6FG), Lucas T x2 (2E), Isla T (KS), Noah S (KS), Carter M (4R), Daniel S (3G), Darcy (3G), Isobel (4M), Aveer C (3S), Amanda (6FG), Christine C x3 (4/5B), Olivia O x2 (2E), Rafael L (2E), Aavin P (1B), Gracie M (3S)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left on Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
Students participating in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competiton have been notified of the main dates and have been emailed a link to the website to check the rules and topics.
This competition encourages students to explore ideas related to multiculturalism in Australia and it allows them the opportunity to practise their public speaking skills and improve their confidence.
I look forward to hearing their perspectives.
