DIGITAL DEVICES - HOW OFTEN ARE THESE USED?
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that from 2020-21External link, 96% of Australians participated in leisure activities and spent an average of 5 hours and 27 mins per day on these activities. This free time involved the use of screens:
- 75% watched TV or videos
- 33% browsed online
- 14% played digital games.
Globally, in Jan 2023, there were 5.16 billion internet users and 4.76 billion social media users.External link While being online keeps us connected to current news and family and friends, we all need to take care and know when it’s time to switch off and take a break.
So, what can we do instead?
This Global Day of Unplugging let us all find something else to spend our leisure time on. Some ideas are:
- go for a walk or a bush walk or a hike
- play a sport or go for a swim
- visit family and friends
- draw, paint or even colour in (this can be very therapeutic)
- complete a giant jigsaw with family or friends
- bring out your boardgames and have fun playing them
- visit a local museum
- read a book, write a story or a poem.
Where can I find more ideas and resources for students?
- Read the parenting and screen time adviceExternal link for primary school-age children from the eSafety Commissioner.
- Get tips for balancing time online for the young person in your familyExternal link from the eSafety Commissioner.
CONGRATULATIONS MICHAEL
Michael qualified for the Swimming Australia Australian Age Championships to be held on the Gold Coast over the Easter long weekend, in the 12-13 years Multi-Class age group. Congratulations Michael. This is an awesome achievement and we are so proud of you!
ENROLLING YOUR CHILD IN YEAR 7 FOR 2024 (repeated)
To enrol your child in Year 7 for 2024, you will need to complete an Expression of Interest for Year 6 to Year 7 transition. The Expression of Interest (EOI) lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7.
The EOI process is now available online. After you submit an EOI and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a high school.
If your child will not be attending a NSW Government high school next year, please let us know by completing a Placement Not Required form.
If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you’ve applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete an EOI and follow up with your school once a decision has been made.
The online process will guide you through your options and collect the information required to make the process as smooth as possible.
For parents/carers who are not able to complete an application online, a paper EOI form can be collected from the school office.
For more information about moving to high school, visit Going to a public school.
Here is a link to the Expression of Interest (EOI) or Placement Not Required (PNR) forms from the school’s enrolment page

Congratulations Aditi
We received this wonderful testimonial from the CEO of the Kids Giving Back program, last week.
Aditi was among 980 young people who assisted in providing over 12,500 hot & cold meals, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs, writing empathetic, positive messages to 13 charities around Sydney in Term 4 and the December/January school holidays.
She demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, compassion, and a strong sense of civic responsibility. They truly embody the spirit of giving back and I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for their contributions. The commitment to altruism is truly inspiring and a testament to the values that your school instils in them.

Term 1 Week 8
Monday 13th March 2023
Dear Parents and Carers
The JPPS P & C Association hosted a Welcome BBQ for school families on Friday evening. Many families popped in to enjoy the sausage sizzle. Thank you to the coordinator of the event, Deepa Garge, and her band of volunteers.
The P & C Association will hold its Annual General Meeting, following the General Meeting, at 7pm tonight in the school annexe. All parents are warmly invited to attend.
An important reminder - If your child attends extracurricular activities at school, after hours, please ensure that you have arranged supervision and a timely dropoff or pickup. Please be aware that the front office is not attended after 3:15pm. Parents are responsible for arranging adequate supervision and safety of their children after hours.
CTHS siblings are now permitted to walk through the OOSH gate to collect their younger brothers or sisters, before walking home together. Students who have older siblings at CTHS are encouraged to sit on the terraces and wait under the COLA, at 2:50pm, unless being collected by parents at Kiss and Drop. We are trying to ensure that the Kiss and Drop shelter is only used for car pickups. It should not be used as a general meeting point, as it's far too crowded.
A hot, sunny day is predicted, this Thursday, as we prepare to host the school's cross country carnival, in and around Francis Greenway oval. Mrs Mu and Mrs Townsend have been busily making the necessary arrangements. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Have an enjoyable week!
Mrs Adela King
Deputy Principal
Congratulations Student Leaders 2023
Many parents and family members were in attendance at the Student Leaders' Induction Assembly, last Thursday. Seventy-four students stood proudly before their peers, teachers and family members, to receive their badges. Our 2023 student leaders are pictured below.
Our School Expectations
Congratulations to our students who have demonstrated our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
This week's expectation is:
Responsibility: Stay in bounds and
use the correct pathways
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box outside Mrs King’s office, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term.
The Purchase Pride badges recorded below, will be presented next Monday morning.
Congratulations to:
Joanna L (6FG), Viraaj R (2R),Max T x2 (4/5B), Timothy W (3S), Mya C (3S), Rohan (3S), Samuel L (1M), Janelle F (5B), Sean S x2 (5B), Zali (2R), Aaron G (4M), Taj L (3S), Zunya x2 (5N), Amber (2D), Daisy (3/4B), William R (4R), Phoebe C (1KR)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left on Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

These awards will be presented to recipients at the Principal's Morning Tea at the end of Term 1. This event is planned to be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, 4th April. The morning tea will be held in the hall and parents of recipients, are invited to attend.

Lost Property is collected and placed in boxes outside the administration building. The office staff collect lost property from the school grounds and return all labelled items to students in their classrooms a few times each week.
Please check these boxes if your child/ren has lost or misplaced an item of clothing or even a lunchbox or drink bottle.
Please also label your child's items so we can return them to their classrooms.
Thank you.
