Have a great week!
Two Truths & One Lie: Thinking Like Mathematicians!
During our teacher training session last week, Miss Moore presented us with the Stage 2 maths problem pictured above and prompted us to reason through careful questioning. Which was correct and which was incorrect? How could we justify our answers? Could we proove our answers in a different way? Did our colleagues use a different strategy? Which strategies are most efficient? Why?
How is asking students to solve this problem different from providing them with a number and asking them to represent it using MAB blocks? What thinking is involved? What maths concepts are we drawing on?
HOW WAS THIS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING APPLIED TO THE KINDY CLASSROOM?
- used wait time and turn and talk with your partner
- childfren showed their thinking with pictures or number sentences
- looked at what strategies children use - number lines , tens frames, word sentences, manipulatives
- teacher questioning - tell me about your problem, what did you find easy, what would you do to make it more challenging? What did you find challenging?
HOW WAS THIS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING APPLIED TO A MATHS LESSON FOR OUR YEAR 1 STUDENTS?
VOCABULARY: Share, equal, division, group
WALT (We are learning to): break collections into groups
Success Criteria:
I can:
- group items into even amounts
- eplain that not all numbers/items evenly fit into a groups
- explain how I got my answer
TASK
Differentiation: Provide the task below and provide a range of resources.
- Concrete (can use counters/teddies etc)
- Pictorial (allowing students to draw the picture out)
- Abstract (students can only use numbers)
Differentiated instruction / questioning, based on observation of students.
2 truths and a lie.
- 8 teddies can be shared evenly into 4 groups
- 24 cubes can be shared evenly into 6 groups
- 18 counters can be shared evenly into 4 groups.
Questions to ask to encourage reasoning:
- How can you show me that you are correct with… a) concrete materials, b) drawing c) numbers?
- What is another way you could show me?
- How would you share the 18 evenly?
Sentence stems provided:
I know …. can be shared evenly because….
EXTENSION: students create their own two truths and a lie
Kindergarten 2023 Information Session
A Kindergarten 2023 Parent Information Session, will be held via Zoom, tomorrow evening, Tuesday 30th August at 6pm. This replaces the session initially planned for Tuesday morning at 9.30am.
A Zoom link would have been emailed out to parents who have registered their child to commence in Kindergarten at John Purchase in 2023.
If you have a child enrolling in kindergarten John Purchase for 2023, and have not enrolled them, please enrol online at https://johnpurch-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ and select the enrolment tab. This will ensure you receive important information about our sessions and the transition program.
We are planning for the transition program to be held on site.
We look forward to connecting with you via Zoom where you will hear valuable information about starting school.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR DANCE GROUPS AND SENIOR CHOIR
Our dance troupes competed in the Hills Eisteddfod Dance Competition on the weekend and all dance groups performed extremely well. Congratulations to the Stage 2 troupe for their highly commended award.
The dance troupes also competed in the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod last week - read about their impressive achievements in Miss Mahler's report below.
We are so very proud of all of our dancers and are very appreciative of the work that Miss Griggs, Miss Mahler and Mrs Musgrove have put into training the groups.
We are also very proud of our senior choir for their performance at the Town Hall last Monday night, and thank Mr Fox for preparing the students so well. Congratulations to all the students involved and to Aiden for his excellent solo section.
COVID-SMART MEASURES TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT TERM 3 (REPEATED)
Many of our existing COVID-smart measures are continuing, including:
- staff, students and visitors staying home if unwell, even if there is a negative RAT, until free of symptoms
- rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and close contacts
- students who are household or close contacts and are symptom free can attend mainstream schools if they receive a negative RAT result everyday for five school days
- staff and visitors who are close or household contacts must also wear a mask while on site
- mask wearing is strongly encouraged for students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors and when physical distancing is not possible
- strongly encouraging all staff, eligible students and their families keep up to date with vaccinations for COVID-19, including booster shots
- good hygiene practices
- continuing to encourage natural ventilation and personal hygiene
- responding to local COVID-19 conditions
SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR - REPEATED
Unfortunately we are still without a School Crossing Supervisor (SCS) at the crossing on Purchase Road before and after school.
Our school may have a staff member at the crossing on most days to promote safety from approximately 8:40am to 9am and from approximately 2:50pm to 3pm.
We therefore ask parents to consider the children's safety and to remind children of the following:
- Cross the road at the designated pedestrian crossing facility
- Stop! Look! Listen! Think! when crossing the road
- Take care whenever you cross
- Don’t run across the road

Dear Parents and Carers
Helpers are urgently needed! If you can spare some time this Thursday, assisting mums at the Father's Day stall in the annexe, please contact parent organiser, Cate Grace, or our front office staff, who will pass on your details.
What a joy it was to hear Stage 3 presenting their choral item at assembly, last week. Congratulations Aiden P, on your beautiful solo and to the students and teachers, who prepared 'Welcome The Day'!
Last Wednesday, Stage 2 and Stage 3 public speaking class finalists, participated in the JPPS final of the Hills Public Speaking Competition. Students were adjudicated by CTHS teacher, Emma Campbell, who based her decisions on the 'manner', 'matter' and 'method' of the speeches. For example: 'Manner' includes such things as eye contact, expression, articulation and timing. 'Matter' includes the content of the speech, its originality and how well an opinion is presented. 'Method' includes how well the speech is structured and sequenced. Congratulations to all students who presented a wide range of topics, including: 'What makes me unique?', 'If I was famous', 'The greatest invention of all time' and 'Things that make my blood boil'. Liam and Aditi (Stage 2 winners) and Avika and Sam (Stage 3 winners) will represent JPPS at the next round.
Difficulties with early morning internet connectivity, last Thursday, did not deter ICAS coordinator, Mrs Musgrove. Fortunately, all ICAS Science examinations were completed during the day, when the internet returned, thanks to the flexibility of the many staff involved. Thank you!
I look forward to popping in to the first information session for Kindergarten 2023 parents, which will be held at 6pm tomorrow evening, via Zoom. Mrs Robbins has already distributed these details.
Have an enjoyable week everyone, and a Happy Father's Day dads!

Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride Badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box outside Mrs King’s office, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher.
The Purchase Pride Badges recorded below, will be presented next Monday morning.
Congratulations to:
Lerry (KH), Kaitlyn O (KH), Avin (2S), Sua K (4G), James K (1B), Sydney L (3/4B), Veronica (KH), Patrick K (KR), Satvik T (1B), Vera G (5F), Adam L (3N), Lexie W (3/4B), Aarya (KH), Viven K (3/4B), Jacob L (KN), Lena K (4S), Jia K (4S), Riya (4S), Ryan (4M), Ellie (1B), Aavin P (KR), Cara (4G)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left on Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Depending on Covid guidelines, Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.
