Term 3 Week 3 - Monday 1st August
'Creating Futures - Education Changing Lives'
Dear Parents and Carers
Every week is education week at JPPS. However, this week we formally recognise and celebrate the learning and great teaching occurring in our classrooms. Look out for your child's grade learning overview for Term 3, which will be emailed home to all parents, over coming days.
Please be sure to schedule a visit to your child's classroom this Thursday, using the booking link in the flier below. In-class visits are restricted to one adult per family, in one of four staggered session times. Mask wearing indoors is strongly encouraged. After the classroom visits, adults are invited to enjoy performances by our choirs and dance troupes. These performances will commence at 10:15am under the COLA.
A fine, sunny afternoon, provided a great backdrop for our K-6 Assembly last week. Stage 2 presented their item and class award recipients stood proudly before the crowd. Please enjoy their photographs below.
Thank you to Mrs Wilson and Mrs Fabris (our school librarians), who have organised the Library Book Fair, operating this week. This is the first fair we have been able to hold for two years, due to the pandemic, so it would be wonderful to see lots of parents and students supporting the school library and perhaps, purchasing a book to enjoy! Details of the Book Fair appear in the teachers' section below.
On Friday, 12th August, all parents are cordially invited to an online masterclass about supporting students' reading comprehension. This session will be presented by the executive team. Please refer to the invitation flyer below, which provides all the login details.
Have a wonderful week, everyone!
Regards
Mrs Adela King
Relieving Principal
Congratulations Mrs Black and Mrs Lovell
Mrs Black and Mrs Lovell travelled to the Northern Territory to compete in the Australian Outback Half Marathon (Mrs Black) and 11km run (Mrs Lovell), last Saturday.
Here they are, pictured with their medals, at the conclusion of their events with iconic Uluru, in the background.
Fitness personified, ladies. Congratulations!
4G Team Building STEM Challenge
Miss Griggs challenged her students to work collaboratively and construct the tallest freestanding tower, using limited resources, in the hall last week. This activity helped students understand that teamwork and effective communication are important skills to master, whilst developing their problem-solving, critical and creative thinking skills.
COVID-SMART MEASURES FOR TERM 3
Many of our existing COVID-smart measures continue into Term 3, including:
- staying home if unwell, even if you have a negative RAT, until you are free of symptoms
- rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and close contacts able to return to school
- strongly encouraging mask wearing, particularly for the first 4 weeks of term
- strongly encouraging all eligible students and their families to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu
- maximising natural ventilation
- good hygiene practices
- strict requirements for close contacts attending school
- responding to local COVID-19 conditions
Some things are changing this term:
COVID-19 vaccination policy update – the mandate requiring COVID-19 vaccination will be lifted for staff in most school settings from 1 August 2022. We will continue to encourage all staff, students and our school community to keep up to date with their vaccinations, including getting a booster shot when eligible.
Boosted day cleaning – our cleaning model has shifted slightly and will now be more concentrated during school hours.
Thank you again for your ongoing support.
Please find The NSW Government Term 3 COVID-smart Settings in Schools Fact Sheets for Parents and Carers below.
Do you know someone who could fill this position?SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR - REPEATED
Unfortunately we are still without a School Crossing Supervisor (SCS) at the crossing on Purchase Road before and after school.
Our school may have a staff member at the crossing on most days to promote safety from approximately 8:40am to 8:55am and from approximately 2:50pm to 3pm.
We therefore ask parents to consider the children's safety and to remind children of the following:
- Cross the road at the designated pedestrian crossing facility
- Stop! Look! Listen! Think! when crossing the road
- Take care whenever you cross
- Don’t run across the road

Dear Parents and Carers
It is ‘Education Week’ and we are looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Open Day’ on Thursday 4th August. Please ensure you have made your booking to visit your child’s classroom on the day.
Please note below that the focus of our school expectations this week is ‘WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL’. We ask that all members of our school community uphold all our expectations when visiting our school. Thank you in advance.
Please see the letter below for information about the upcoming NCCD – ‘Nationally Consistent Collection of Data’ on school students with a disability.
Online Programs
The following three online programs are available for your child to access for no cost if you have given permission at the beginning of the year or when your child started at JPPS. The teachers have previously notified you of your child’s username and password to access the different programs. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are having any difficulty with the programs.
1. Phonics Hero (K-2) is a step-by-step program building from sounds to single words and then sentences. The program helps to build the students' accuracy and confidence when reading and spelling with engaging games and a cool storyline!
2. Sunshine Online (K-6) is based on a literacy and maths program – delivered digitally! The program allows students to access levelled reading material from home. Students will be set specific books by their teachers to read and can complete comprehension activities based on the readings. The e-book is the first focus, followed by interactive activities that explore a range of skills from the text. The program is supported by phonics e-books and activities, games, songs, raps and rhymes. The e-books are narrated to support the reader. The site also has a full mathematics program to develop skills and understandings in early numeracy.
3. Mathletics (K-6) is a program that supports learning in maths that the students are covering at school. It allows the students to progress at their rate and builds confidence through personalised learning, exciting games and mastery challenges. Students will be set specific levels, activities and challenges to complete by their teachers.

Our School Expectations
This week’s expectation is about avoiding accidents and walking around the school.
Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Prides recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride Badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box outside Mrs King’s office, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher.
The Purchase Pride Badges recorded below, will be presented next Monday morning.
Congratulations to:
Collin (KH), Lisa (KH), Jayden S (KH), Nathan (1B), Bradley C (1B), Jennifer (2S), Spencer L (2S), Garron (2Y), Lucy (2M) Guhan (2E), Charlie (4G), Kyros (4G), Aayansh (4G), Donnie (4G), Darin L (4S) x 4, Taeyoon (4S), Aaron S (4S), Angela (4S), Riya A (4S), Elizabeth (4S), Lena K (4S), Sydney (3/4B), Joshua Y (3/4B), Jacob (3/4B), Liam (3/4B), Ellen (3/4B), Alex (3/4B), Elvin (3/4B), Erum K (3/4B), Justin (3N), Kayshav (3N), Jane (3G), Nessa Q (5/6B) x 2, Ivy (5T)
Class Awards System
JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left on Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the school administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
This year, all awards (including Bronze) received by 3pm on Thursday afternoons, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Depending on Covid guidelines, Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.
Bronze Award
These awards will be presented to recipients at the Principal's Morning Tea at the end of Term 2. This event is planned to be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, 20th September. The morning tea will be held in the hall and parents of recipients, will be invited to attend.
Congratulations to:
Adelyn W (2M)
Silver Award
These awards will be presented at the next assembly. This assembly is planned to occur at 1:35pm on Thursday 25th August (Week 6), under the COLA. All parents are cordially invited to attend.
Gold Award
These awards will be presented at the next assembly. This assembly is planned to occur at 1:35pm on Thursday 25th August (Week 6), under the COLA. All parents are cordially invited to attend.
Bronze Medallion
These awards will be presented at the next assembly. This assembly is planned to occur at 1:35pm on Thursday 25th August (Week 6), under the COLA. All parents are cordially invited to attend.
The Bronze Medallion morning tea for recipients and Mrs Black and Mrs King, will be held at recess on Wednesday, 21st September.

Premier's Reading Challenge
The PRC closing date for student entries is 19th August 2022. Please make sure your books are entered into online reading logs before midnight of that date in order to ensure they qualify for the 2022 Challenge.
Students use the same username and password to access the reading logs that they use to log on to the computers at school. Happy reading!

P & C News
Band Program
The P&C is excited to announce that we have appointed Teaching Services Australia to operate the JPPS Band Program until December 2023. We are working with them to organise a start date to take over the band program, however, we anticipate that band will resume in the next week or so. The P&C will be finalising accounts for Terms 1 and 2 of the band program in the next few weeks, and future invoicing will be from Teaching Service Australia. We’ll be sending more details to Band families in the next few weeks.
We’re incredibly excited about this next phase for our school band program, and the benefits the additional benefits of an externally administered band program will bring.
Uniform Shop
John Purchase Public School P and C Association is seeking to employ a casual manager for the Uniform Shop working 10-15 hours per week. Do you want to be part of a wonderful and friendly team? We also have amazing parent volunteers who can assist in the Uniform Shop in keeping the shop well organised and with fulfilling orders. Details about the role, and the opportunity to apply are available online at https://www.seek.com.au/job/57797979. Applications close next Wednesday, 10th August.
Next P&C Meeting
Our Next P&C Meeting will be held on Monday next week at 7pm in the Annexe. We will likely have an opportunity for parents to join via Zoom if they are unable to attend in person – we’ll share details in next week’s newsletter.
K-2 Playground Upgrade
As Mrs Black mentioned in the newsletter last week – we’re overjoyed at the development of the play area behind the Kindy Classrooms that was completed over the school holidays. It looks great, and we can’t wait to hear all the stories coming home of the memories the kids have formed in this new play area. This project was jointly funded by the P&C, the School and the NSW Government under the Community Building Partnerships program. We’re very thankful for the support of school community by the NSW Government through this program, and the opportunity it has given us over the last several years to invest in grounds and facilities upgrades for the school.
