A very warm welcome to the 2025 school year. I do hope our families had the opportunity to rest and recharge and to make some special memories with family and friends.
I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to all our new families joining our school community! Whether your children are starting their first day in kindergarten or joining us in higher grades, we are thrilled to have you as part of our school family.
Transitioning to a new school can be both an exciting and challenging experience. Please know that we are here to support you every step of the way. Our dedicated teachers, support staff, and students are ready to help make this transition smooth and enjoyable for you and your children.

As part of this ongoing commitment, a recent School Development Day focused on strengthening our approach to rigour and challenge across the curriculum. A key part of this professional learning was our continued journey in developing a culture of thinking—an environment where students are encouraged to engage deeply with concepts, ask meaningful questions, and think critically about their learning.
Our instructional rounds, classroom observations, and formal data such as NAPLAN results affirm that we are well on our way to embedding this culture of thinking and rigour.
One of the focal points of our professional learning was generative questioning—questions that push students beyond simple recall and require them to think analytically, creatively, and reflectively across key learning areas.
Why is generative questioning so important? These types of questions stimulate higher-order thinking, prompting students to make connections, justify their reasoning, and explore concepts from multiple perspectives. When students engage with generative questions, they are not just learning content—they are developing the skills to think independently, solve problems, and apply knowledge in new and complex ways.
Our teachers came up with some thought-provoking generative questions for this term:

To further support our focus on rigour, our staff participated in a Zoom session with renowned rigour expert Barbara Blackburn. Using her Rigour Evaluation Tool, teachers examined and discussed learning tasks, assessing whether they provided the right level of challenge. This reflective process helped our team refine and elevate classroom instruction, ensuring that our students are consistently engaged in meaningful and rigorous learning experiences.
Our focus on rigour is not just about academic achievement; it is about preparing our students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners. As we continue to refine our teaching practices and challenge our students in their learning, we are confident that our school will continue to be a place of excellence, curiosity, and success.


WELCOME MRS PARIS
We are thrilled to welcome our new Learning and Support Teacher, Mrs Helen Paris. This year, Helen will be working on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

We were delighted to have been able to form our classes on Friday. Classes are formed following careful consideration by the staff of the students’ needs. This is a very complex process and I thank the teachers and learning support team for the thought and time they have put into placing the students. The 2025 classes are as follows:

OUR SCHOOL DAY
Our school day is organised as follows:
8.25am: Morning bell (no students should arrive at school before this time unless attending the OOSH as the playground is not supervised). After arriving at school at or after 8:25am, students are directed to the COLA. Supervision is provided from 8:25am.
8:55am: Second morning bell – students line up in their allocated class spot in the COLA.
10:55am: Recess
11.15am: End of recess
12.35pm: Lunchtime – students sit in their designated area to eat their lunch before playing
1.25pm: End of lunch time
2:50pm: End of school day
STUDENT HEALTH CARE NEEDS & EMERGENCY CONTACTS
We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.
ANAPHYLAXIS
John Purchase Public School is concerned about the safety and wellbeing of all our students. Many of you will know someone who is affected by anaphylaxis, a life threatening allergic reaction. Our school does its best to be an allergy aware school. Staff have had training in severe allergy management and we have implemented a number of strategies to help keep students at risk of anaphylaxis as safe as we can. We have over 25 students who live with the risk of anaphylaxis to foods and insect stings. Whilst these children are being taught to care for themselves at an age appropriate level, we ask that you help us educate your child on the importance of not sharing food with others, washing hands after eating and calling out to an adult if they think their friend with allergies is sick. With increased awareness and understanding of anaphylaxis, you will be able to help protect those around you.
A food allergy is an immune system response to a normally harmless food protein that the body believes is harmful. When the individual eats food containing that protein, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, triggering symptoms that can affect a person’s breathing, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and/or heart. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life- threatening. It must be treated as a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment and urgent medical attention. It is estimated that up to 400,000 (2%) Australians, including 1 in 20 children suffer from food allergies and some of them will experience a life-threatening (anaphylactic) reaction.
Symptoms of food allergy can include:
Mild to moderate allergic reaction
- Tingling of the mouth
- Hives, welts or body redness
- Swelling of the face, lips, eyes
- Vomiting, abdominal pain (note these are signs of a severe allergic reaction if the person has insect allergy)
Severe allergic reaction - ANAPHYLAXIS
- Difficult/noisy breathing
- Swelling of the tongue
- Swelling or tightness in the throat
- Difficulty talking or hoarse voice
- Wheeze or persistent cough
- Persistent dizziness or collapse
- Pale and floppy (young children)
Nine foods cause 90% of food allergies. These foods are:
- Egg
- Sesame
- Milk
- Soy
- Peanut
- Fish
- Tree nuts (cashew, almond, pistachio etc)
- Crustacea (prawns, lobster, crabs etc)
- Wheat
Peanuts are the leading cause of severe allergic reactions, followed by tree nuts, shellfish, fish and milk. At our school there are students with allergies to: nuts, eggs, sesame, dairy, seafood, kiwi fruit, oats, garlic, potatoes and wheat. Adrenaline/epinephrine is the first line treatment for severe allergic reactions and can be administered via auto-injector, called the EpiPen®.

As the only way to manage a food allergy is avoidance, the school has implemented several strategies to help prevent a severe allergic reaction. We can never totally eliminate the risk of an anaphylaxis but we can all do things that will help lessen the risk. Please consider the child with food allergy when packing your child’s lunch or when sending in food for any special occasion, including birthdays, special events and school excursions.
We understand that dairy products are a component of a healthy diet for children and that children will consume dairy products at school. Foods that ‘May contain traces of various foods’ are fine for the non-allergic students to consume at school as long as they do not share food.

IT'S A BOY!
We enthusiastically congratulate Ms Lucy Brooks on the birth of a gorgeous baby boy, named Will. Will was born on 31 January, weighing 3830 grams and measuring 51cm.

From arranging desks and resources to crafting creative displays, they’ve put their hearts into preparing for the year ahead. ATTENDANCE MATTERS
As we begin a new school year, I’d like to take this opportunity to emphasise the critical role regular attendance plays in your child’s academic and social development.
Consistent attendance is essential for academic progress, as every day of learning builds upon the last. Beyond the classroom, regular attendance fosters social connections, a sense of belonging, and engagement with peers and the school community. Conversely, absenteeism can disrupt learning, contribute to social isolation, and lead to disengagement from school life.
To support you in monitoring your child’s attendance, we encourage parents to access the Parent Portal in School Bytes where you can view your child’s attendance levels on a visual map. This map provides a clear view of your child’s attendance rate, calculated on the number of actual and partial days attended as a percentage of the total possible school days for the term. Attendance summaries will also be included in your child’s half-yearly and yearly reports.
Instructions for accessing this information through the Parent Portal are provided below. If you need any assistance setting up or navigating the portal, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our business manager, Mrs Clare Cattell.
In this newsletter, we’ve also included a poster highlighting the impact of days lost on a child’s education, as well as the Department of Education’s Parent Information Sheet. These resources are designed to help you understand the importance of consistent attendance and how to support your child.
At our school, we monitor attendance regularly throughout the year. If your child’s attendance percentage falls below 90% or if there are unexplained absences, we will contact you to discuss any challenges and work together to find solutions that support improved attendance.
If you have any concerns or need assistance regarding your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance. Additional support is also available from our learning support teacher or deputy principal.

Once you have set up your Parent Portal account in School Bytes (see below information in 'From the Office' news) you will be able to view your child's attendance data.
In the Parent Portal you will see a tab called 'attendance' on the top bar of the page. This will bring you to your child/ren's attendance information.

Please note: School development days for staff are included in these term dates and parents and carers should not send their children to school on these days.

Welcome back to another exciting school year!
It was wonderful to be able to address our hall filled with excited new students and their parents, last Thursday. We are proud to welcome new families to our excelling school; a school which implements eight highly effective practices to drive quality teaching and learning: collaboration, high expectations, explicit teaching, effective feedback, use of data to inform practice, assessment, classroom management and wellbeing, represented in the diagram below.
Our school day begins at 8:55am. Parents please be aware that morning playground supervision commences at 8:25am. Unless attending extracurricular groups such as band, dance, or sport training, students should not arrive at school before this time. Here is the JPPS timetable:

The three JPPS Bands commence rehearsals in the hall, before school, this week. Their schedule is as follows:

Wednesday 7:30am - 8:30am Intermediate Band
A timetable of all the extracurricular groups offered at JPPS, by school staff and outside agencies, will be published in coming weeks.
As outlined in my letter to parents, every JPPS student will be provided with the opportunity to engage in suitable homework plans this year; designed to be achievable and stress-free for students and their parents, as well as, manageable for teachers. Our class teachers will outline homework programs at our parent information sessions planned for Wednesday 26th February, so these programs will not commence until after this event. However, every student is encouraged to participate in reading at home, every day. We cannot emphasise enough, the importance of regular reading at home. If you choose not to participate in homework activities, we do implore you to maintain and reinforce the importance of a daily reading regime at home. Parental discretion will continue to be the primary determinant of involvement in homework at our school. You are kindly invited to consider if you would like your child to participate in organised homework programs prepared by teaching staff.
Bicycle licences for older students in Years 3-6 need to be updated annually. Licence applications may be downloaded from School Bytes.
If your child is returning to school, after a medical procedure or sustaining an injury, please ensure that the front office is advised, so that a meeting can be arranged with the Deputy Principal, to prepare a risk assessment.
Classes will elect their representatives for the Student Representative Council in coming weeks. Parents are cordially invited to attend the Induction Assembly for Student Leaders on Wednesday 26th February, commencing at 1:35pm under the COLA.
As you can imagine, the organisation and smooth transition back to the new school year requires an enormous amount of planning and 'paperwork'. Please do your best to read all information and letters and return any permission forms promptly, to expedite routines and enable upcoming special events, such as the swimming carnival. I have summarised the Term 1 Calendar below.

A Reminder About Digital Devices at School
(an extract from JPPS Guidelines)
The classrooms at John Purchase Public School are equipped with digital devices such as iPads, notebooks and personal computers, for educational purposes and necessary adjustments to support individual needs. Online services are accessed, with teacher supervision, in the context of a learning environment. Therefore, personal student devices are not required at JPPS, to support the learning of individuals, as provision for ICT has been met by this school.
When used appropriately, mobile phones and related digital technologies, offer many advantages in terms of ease of communication and a sense of personal safety. John Purchase Public School accepts that some parents give their children mobile phones to protect them from everyday risks involving personal security and safety. However, mobile phones have the potential to have a negative impact on the learning environment and when used inappropriately can put the safety and wellbeing of students at risk. The widespread ownership of mobile phones, requires that the staff, students and parents at John Purchase
Public School take steps to ensure mobile phones and related digitaldevices, such as smart watches, are used in a responsible and safe manner.
An increasing number of incidents involving the inappropriate use of mobile phones and social media both at school and home, are of concern, especially as our students do not meet the minimum age thresholds set by many social media sites. We seek the assistance of parents, to work collaboratively with the school to continue to provide a safe and supportive environment, which optimises student learning. We ask parents/carers to set aside some time
to have a conversation with your child about their use of mobile phones and social media.
The Australian Government website http://www.esafety.gov.au/ is a valuable resource which provides parents with an eSafety guide to popular social media sites and apps, as well as helpful information and strategies related to cyberbullying and internet usage.
In summary, students' personal devices such as smart watches and fitness bands should NOT be connected to the Internet when children are at school. Parents and students need to ensure that measures are taken to ensure that the Internet connection is disabled at school (or on an excursion), such as switching the device to aeroplane mode.
Students' mobile phones should be off and away, while students are in the classroom or on the playground, during the school day.

Purchase Pride Badges
Purchase Pride awards recognise positive student behaviour on the playground and in the classroom. When students receive ten Purchase Pride award cards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office foyer. Each set of ten awards needs to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class. The acceptance of awards closes for administration at 9am every Thursday morning.
Purchase Pride cards also have a 'tear-off' strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box in the award shelf, to go in the lucky dip draw, for a canteen voucher. Canteen vouchers are drawn by our SRC representatives, at the end of each term. Students are notified directly, if successful.
Award recipients will be presented with a coloured Purchase Pride badge, the week after their name is published in this newsletter, during term time. This badge may be worn on the school uniform. Students are encouraged to hand in their awards regularly and not 'stockpile' them.

Class Awards System
In addition to Purchase Prides, JPPS has an incremental class awards system. When a student has received ten class awards, these should be left in the boxes on the ‘award shelf’ inside the school office. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached. A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued. Students are encouraged to hand in their awards, rather than 'stockpiling' them until Term 4, so they don't miss out on special celebrations, such as the Principal's Morning Tea.
10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion
50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day!
All awards (including Bronze) received by 9am on Thursday mornings, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday, in term time. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented. Silver Awards, Gold Awards and all Medallions, are presented at whole school assemblies. Please note that Bronze Awards are only presented at the end of each term, at the Principal's Morning Tea.

IMPORTANT: To ensure that the registration process works smoothly, and you can link your account to your child, make sure that you use the same email address that you have provided to the school upon your child’s enrolment.

FROM THE CANTEEN
Welcome Back: Welcome back to another exciting school year! We are excited to serve you again at the school canteen.
Welcome to new families: Welcome to new families of JPPS. The canteen is open daily from 8.30am to 1.15pm and provides recess and lunch to students and teachers. Lunch orders can be placed over the counter before school or via the FlexiSchools app by 9.30am. Lunches are picked up from the canteen at 12.30 by students and taken to their class. If any students do not have lunch, or it gets dropped or eaten by birds (yes this does happen), the student will be given lunch from the canteen and a note will be either sent home or emailed with payment due the following day. Payments can be made via Flexischools.
Price Update: Due to cost increases from our suppliers, there have been some slight price changes to some items for 2025. We appreciate your understanding and support. We hope you understand our need to increase prices while still trying to maintain reasonable prices to our parents.
New Pizza on the menu: We are introducing a new pizza to our menu – Cheese or BBQ Chicken. We can't wait for students to try it!
Volunteers Needed: A huge thank you to those who have already signed up to help in the canteen! Without the help of our volunteers we would not be able to offer the services to the students that we do. However we are in desperate need of more volunteers to fill our roster. If you can spare one day a month, we'd love your help. Typically volunteers come in anytime between 9 and 9:30am, make sandwiches etc (no cooking involved) serve at recess and lunch and finish approx 1:10pm, lunch is provided.

Online Ordering & Pick Up In Shop:
To shorten your waiting time in the shop, we highly recommend all parents order uniforms online and arrange pick up. Items can be changed if there is a sizing issue.

Friendly Reminders:
Any size change of items (except hats & socks) has to be arranged within 14 days upon purchase with FULL packaging and receipt shown ONLY. Any used items or missing packaging will definitely NOT be accepted.
